The regular Merkur 34C has long been one of my favorite safety razors. When I saw Geofatboy's YouTube videos of the Merkur 34 Edition 1896 INOX safety razor, my first thought was: "It's very nice, but I do not need one more safety razor." My collection is “modest” by some accounts. This razor makes 14 for me. I do know that there are shavers out there who have many (many!) more.
I thought about the Merkur INOX for several months, and I decided to buy it, mainly for four reasons: (1) I like stainless steel safety razors, (2) there is no blade overhang on this razor, (3) I like the size of the Merkur 34 with its short handle, and (4) I like 2-piece safety razors.
Instead of describing the razor, I would direct you to Geo's videos on YouTube where he describes the razor perfectly. I'll just say that it comes in a nice blue presentation box with a leather travel case and 10 Merkur DE blades and that it is nicely engraved. As I said, the INOX razor is the same size as the regular 34C, which I like. (I like short-handled razors.)
As Geo said in his videos, the 34 INOX is a bit more aggressive than the regular 34C razor. I recently went three days without shaving, and my face was pretty smooth after just one pass with the 34 INOX. The little card that comes in the box says to use short straight strokes with little or no pressure, and I can vouch for that: the weight of the razor is enough to give you a smooth shave. However, I think that you really can use this razor every day if you need to shave every day.
The only thing that took me a while to get used to was installing and removing the DE razor blade. The regular 34C has a longer internal threaded post, and somehow it is easier to install and remove blades on the regular 34C than on the 34 INOX. The threaded post on the INOX razor is a lot shorter, and it does not "catch" as easily as the longer post on the 34C. However, after several shaves, I got used to it by doing this: I learned to hold my fingers farther down so that they cover both the top cap and the base plate. That keeps the top cap from spinning around while I’m fiddling with the blade.
I'll say once again that there is no blade overhang, and that means that there's no danger of scraping or nicking the underside of your nose or your ear lobes.
I have a REX razor stand, and the 34 INOX, with the hole in the bottom of the handle, fits perfectly onto the REX stand. When I'm not using the INOX razor, I like to look at it on its stand when I go into the "shave den."
I also want to say something about Shave Nation's service. I ordered the Merkur 34 INOX on Sunday, December 28, 2025. I received a confirmation email right away. The next morning, Monday, December 29, I received an email that the razor had shipped! The estimated delivery date was to be Monday, January 4, 2026, but it arrived on Friday, January 2. That's great considering that there was a holiday in there and that the razor went from Chicago to where I live in New England.
Final note: The Merkur 34 Edition 1896 INOX is not cheap, but if you are willing to splurge, or if you're thinking about a gift for yourself or for someone else, you really can't go wrong. This truly is the razor that you'll be handing down to one of your grandsons or nephews or a favorite “young ‘un” when that day comes.
