Merkur Safety Razor 23 Stainless Steel

The safety razor Merkur 23 in stainless steel was conceived in the 1920s and has stayed relevant thanks to unmatched German precision craftsmanship. Anyone seeking a close yet gentle shave, an elegant yet functional design, and materials built to last for decades will find the ideal solution here. With its long, diamond-knurled handle, the Merkur 23 guarantees a secure grip even when your fingers are wet with water and soap. The closed-comb head with straight edge glides smoothly over the skin—a feature especially appreciated by newcomers to traditional shaving who refuse to compromise on precision and comfort.

Why choose a Merkur 23 safety razor
Every detail of the Merkur 23 reflects a century of experience and innovation. The body is machined from AISI 4301 stainless steel, while the head uses satin-finished 316L steel, renowned for its resistance to corrosive agents. This combination creates a reliable tool even in humid environments such as hotel bathrooms, gyms, or professional barbershops. Unlike many disposable razors or multi-blade models with plastic parts, the safety razor Merkur 23 will not rust, degrade, or lose its cutting efficiency over time.

Its compact dimensions (106 × 43 × 25 mm) and 74 g weight (88 g with packaging) make it easy to handle and perfectly balanced: the long handle distributes weight evenly, letting you apply just the right amount of pressure with no effort. This translates into more controlled movements, a lower risk of irritation, and the satisfying feel of a professional-grade tool gliding across your face.

Practical advantages of a safety razor over multi-blade systems

  • Reduced irritation: a single high-quality blade cuts hair cleanly without tugging or stressing the skin.
  • Long-term savings: replacement blades cost a fraction of multi-blade cartridges.
  • Environmental sustainability: far less plastic waste thanks to an almost endlessly reusable body.
  • Simple maintenance: a quick rinse under warm water and a wipe with a soft cloth keep it immaculate.
  • Cutting precision: the closed-comb head makes it easy to define sideburns, moustaches, and edges.

Smooth shave and impeccable hygiene
The Merkur 23 features a generous gap between blade and head, allowing lather and cut hairs to flow away without clogging. This often-overlooked detail keeps the blade clean, residue-free, and always ready for a crisp cut. Frequent travellers will appreciate that you only need to unscrew the handle, remove the blade, and slip everything into a pocket or toiletries bag; the safety razor withstands knocks and requires no special lubricants.

Tips to get the most from your safety razor

  • Soften your beard with warm water or a hot towel for 30 seconds before lathering.
  • Choose a quality shaving cream or soap and work it up with a badger or synthetic brush.
  • Shave with the grain on the first pass, then one or two cross-passes if you want an extra-smooth finish.
  • Rinse the head often: the open geometry keeps the blade clean, but a stream of lukewarm water removes any residue.
  • Do not press: let the weight of the razor guide the cut, moving your wrist at about a 30° angle.
  • After use, disassemble the head, dry gently, and store in an airy place.

Maintenance and longevity
A quick rinse under running water and a wipe with a soft towel are all you need to keep your Merkur 23 in perfect shape. Once a month, give it a deeper clean in warm water with mild soap, using an old toothbrush to remove any lime scale. The stainless steel in this safety razor resists oxidation, but proper drying further preserves the satin finish’s shine.

The Perfect Razor

I already loved the 23C but the SS version makes it better. If you are a fan of the original 23C, you will love this.

Merkur competes with SS

Merkur is a cool brand. Sometimes they are known to have some QC issues but there razors shave great. They also have that “old school” feel because they are an old brand. With the recent update to an SS razor on the 23 razor, they did a nice job. Most other brands have a stainless steel model now and Merkur needed to have their own too in order to compete. I had a great shave with this razor and it’s expertly done. The handle is long and thin but has good weight. The overall razor weight is also solid. I’d say this razor is a small step above the Merkur 34C in aggression but I’d still consider it on the mild side. YYMV of course. I used a Merkur DE blade with some Blackship grooming shave soap and splash. I had about two days growth and the razor tore it down with zero irritation. This is an easy razor to use and I recommend it.
