The Norton 4000/8000 is one of the most popular sharpening stones for straight razors.
Waterstones are synthetic stones designed to be softer than oil stones. These softer grade stones are used with water as the lubricant (versus oil) to develop fast-cutting slurry.
Stones may need flattening with some frequency.
Combination Stones provide double the grit and reduce the cost of getting started with Water stones, while providing a full selection of grits.
This stone is packaged in a sturdy plastic case which can be used to hold the stone when sharpening and as a water reservoir as well.

4000 Grit: A fine grit that cuts fast but does not polish.
8000 Grit: Provides a polished, smooth edge.

Razor honing

Worked well the two times I used il

A nice combination stone

I needed to get a good hone on straight razor and this did the trick. I finished it off with another stone, a 12,000 grit and then the usual stropping. Very nice indeed. I look forward to keeping my blades up with this set.

Didn't Realize My Razor Was Dull

I've used other stones in the past for knife sharpening. This is the best one that I've purchased so far. I love the drain holes in the bottom of the case. I've been using my Dovo full hollow ground razor for about 2 months. I thought that honing it now might be a little premature. I found out that I was wrong during the 1st stroke after sharpening. Made a huge difference in how the blade performed! Another great product from Shavenation.com.

The right tool for the right job

The title of my review has been a life-long mantra for me, any job goes easier when you have the right tools. This stone is a basic part of an overall kit to maintain the best edge on my straight razor, augmented with polishing stones of higher grit and a lapping stone to keep them all aligned. Sharpening a piece of steel by rubbing it against a stone has an elemental satisfaction to it, and this product provides an important part of that process.
